The Carrilet is a greenway that crosses the counties of Garrotxa, Selva, Gironès and Baix Empordà, ideal for cycling or walking. Originally, it was a narrow-gauge railway line built at the end of the 19th century, which linked Olot with Sant Feliu de Guíxols. In 2000, this line was adapted to become a greenway.
As it is an old railway, the gradient is gentle and the path is wide and well-kept, ideal for people of all ages. The Carrilet greenway passes through several towns and the distances can be easily adapted to everyone's needs.
The full route is about 94 km, which can be divided however you like.
The route starts in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, a place of great scenic interest. The route continues through the Hostoles valley, where you can take a swim in one of the gorges of the Brugent river. After passing through Amer, follow the river Ter to see various water-powered constructions, passing through Bescanó and the marshes of Salt, until you reach Girona.
Leaving Girona, the first town you come to is Quart. The route crosses the Selva basin and half way across, you reach Cassà de la Selva, the highest point of this stage (136m). You continue along the Ridaura valley, with the Gavarres massif on the left and the Cadiretes massif on the right, until you reach the port of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where you can enjoy a well-deserved beer at some of the best beach bars on the Costa Brava.
Please note that this is not a loop trail, so you will need to plan for return transport.
